In Class
Today we discussed the symbolism in the first two chapters in The Great Gatsby.

Homework
Read chapter 3 and annotate at least every four pages. In double-entry journal format choose 5 quotes that you think are important in the novel. You will analyse the quotes and write your reactions to them. I will be checking annotations for chapters 1-3 tomorrow.

In Class
Today we compared chapter 1 in The Great Gatsby to "A Night at the Fair". We also discussed chapter 1 and looked at examples of foreshadowing.

Homework
Read chapter 2 and annotate at least every four pages. Answer the following questions in complete sentences.
1. Describe Mr. Wilson and Myrtle. Do they fit into the setting?

2. Describe the violent act Tom committed against Myrtle. What does this reveal about him?

Tuesday

In class
Today you took the vocabulary quiz. If you were absent you need to see me ASAP (as soon as possible) so you can take the quiz either during L&L or SOS. I distrubuted The Great Gatsby. If you have not yet already, don't forget to turn in RAGTIME!!!!!

Homework
Read the first chapter in The Great Gatsby. You should annotate at least every 4 pages. Answer the questions in complete senteces; they will be collected tomorrow.
Questions
1. Describe Nick. What facts do you know about him and what do you infer about him? What kind of narrator do you think he will be and why?

2. How does Nick react to Jordan?

3. What does Tom’s behavior reveal about his character? Do you think he and Nick will get along? Why or why not?

4. Nick starts the novel by relaying his father’s words, “‘Whenever you feel like criticizing any one,’ he told me, ‘just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.’”. List Nick’s advantages. Does he go on to judge people in Chapter 1 or does he take his father’s advice? Provide evidence from the text

Monday

In class
Today we started class by going over what is expected of you when you are in school and in English class. Then we had a Do Now; reviewed that and then started the Gallery Walk. There were six stations set up, each with a different picture. Students rotated through each picture and wrote comments on the chart parper; jazz music played in the background.

Homework
Study for the vocabulary Quiz!!! Part I is matching, Part II is fill-ins, and in Part III you are developing your own sentences. You will be tested on all the words on the handout. Also, if you have not returned Ragtime, you must do so by tomorrow in order to recieve The Great Gatsby.

Break Homework

Read and annotate F. Scott Fitzgerald's biography and his short story "A Night at the Fair". Answer discussion questions on the story. Bring in Ragtime if you didn't already. Vocabulary quiz will be on Tuesday

In Class
Word of the day: Panoply. I distributed the homework that needs to be completed over the break. If you were out today you MUST see me tomorrow to get the sheets. You also continued to work on your Ragtime projects.

Homework
Put the finishing touches on your projects because you are presenting tomorrow!! No late projects will be accepted. Don't forget to return the text, Ragtime.

We continued working on the rough drafts of the Ragtime projects. Word of the day: renunciation

Homework
Continue work on project.

Even though there is no school today you should continue working on your projects. You will only have half of tomorrow's period to do so. Presentations will go on as scheduled, on Friday.

Monday

In Class
Word of the Day: proliferate. We worked in groups where each group was assigned one question and had to discuss and answer it. The findings were then written on the board. We reviewed the rubric that will be used to grade the projects. Individually, students wrote about their favorite point in the book and we shared a few.

Homework
Bring in the outline of your project. This can consist of bullets outlining what you will be writing about or drawing. Do any necessary research tonight as well. Also bring in a part of your rough draft, like the first paragraph or first poem you will include in the project. You absolutley need this for class tomorrow because that is what you will be working on.

In Class
Today we discussed Chapter 37 and read Chapter 38 out loud. A sign-up sheet was passed around so students can be held accountable for what option they chose for the Ragtime project.

Homework
Read and annotate Chapters 39 and 40. That wraps up the novel. Be prepared for discussion on Monday. If you have any questions about the project don't hesitate to e-mail me.

In Class
With a partner we discussed chapters 35 and 36 with a focus on how the lives of Coalhouse, Emma and Whitman have begun to change. Then, individually, we chose one of these characters and wrote a paragraph from their perspective, writing in first person. The options for the Ragtime project were distributed and explained.

Homework

In class we reviewed chapters 23-34 by dividing into groups and having each group responsible for 2 chapters. Students were to discuss the key characters, plot and important quotes from their assigned chapters. Then the findings were written on the board.

Nice to meet you!

February 2, 2010
Today we got to know each other a bit, being that Ms. Bryant will be out for a few months. We discussed the Regents exam and checked the Homework.

Homework: If you haven't already, read and annotate up to Chapter 34 in Ragtime so we can all be on the same page, literally and figuratively.
